Metformin is a medicine specially intended for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and can be taken by people to whom it was prescribed. Metformin is not intended for children younger than 10 years old, so make sure you do not give this drug to your child if he or she is younger than that to avoid health complications. Your dose may be changed from time to time to make sure you get all the benefits of your treatment, but you need to avoid adjusting the dose yourself, as this may lead to an overdose and is not going to produce the effects desired. If you have been prescribed the extended release tablet, make sure you do not chew or crush it – just take the tablet whole to make sure it starts dissolving only once it reaches your stomach. Your blood, as well as your kidney function, may need to be tested by your health care provider regularly. Make sure you show up for all the appointments you have. If you need a surgery or get infected, your dose may need to be adjusted. However, never adjust the dose of metformin yourself, as this can be quite dangerous. Such symptoms as mild nausea, gas, muscle pain, weakness, diarrhea, headache, and stomach pain are considered to be mild side effects and you are not supposed to report them to your health care provider.
